At each annual clothing issue in addition to a new regimental, each Marine was issue two shirts, a waistcoat (vest), two pairs of trousers, and a pair of breeches, referred to collectively as his ‘small clothes’.  These items were made of either white cotton or linen for Marines serving in the Americas.
