TAKE THE KING'S SHILLING!
Text Box: Cocked Hat

Marines wore the same black cocked hat as the Army, which provided good cover from the sun, rain, and snow. It was called a cocked hat because the front corner is cocked above the left eye and had a black bow tie shaped piece, called a cockade affixed. The edges of the cocked hat had colored trim to denote rank, white for privates and silver for sergeants.
